The name of the locality of Mirepoix originates from the Latin Mirum Podium, meaning who looks at the mountain. In Occitan, it became Miro Pech, then Miro Peix, meaning who looks at fish. It gave its origin to the coat of arms of Mirepoix, depicting a silver fish on a blue background with three golden stars and dating from the beginning of the 19th century.
