On April 15th, 2002, the freighter Vaeanu II ran aground on the island of Rimatara. If no black rat was trapped during the 252 « trapping nights » organized after the sinking, the vigilance is permanent because the arrival of the black rat on the island by air or sea would sign the end of the Kuhl's Lorikeet, the emblematic species of Rimatara.
