The common spruce (Picea abies) has a lifespan of around five hundred years in its primary habitat (mountain forests), but specimens between five and ten thousand years have been recorded in Sweden. With age, its bark cracks into large, irregular scales. With an average height of 114 to 131 feet (35 to 40 meters), it can similarly measure up to 196 feet (60 meters). Its trunk, on the other hand, rarely exceeds 4.9 feet (1.5 meters) in diameter but can be much thinner in densely populated spruce forests.
