Pandanus is cultivated by the sea in the region of Poindimié, notably to serve as a basic material for the braiding of numerous objects. The variety used is the long-leaved pandanus. Its leaves, which reach a length of 6.5 ft (2 m), are first stripped of their central vein, rolled up and put to dry.
