Long daily distances

The Common Crane (Grus grus) is a very big bird (almost 1.20 m high). It has long legs ending in three fingers. Its wings are streamlined; its large neck gives it a queenly stance. When it flies, it stretches out completely. Its wingspan is impressive: between 1.90 and 2.30 m. The cranes reach high cruising speeds (56 mph or 90 km/h) and can cover long daily distances. The Common Crane uses thermal lift to soar, taking the form of a “plus”. Thus avoiding flapping flight, which saves energy.
