Two-thirds of the Inuit population still live on hunting and fishing from which they derive most of their protein and fat-rich diet despite an increase in carbohydrate since the mid-20th century. In winter, ringed seals are their main source of fresh meat while in summer the diversification of resources due to the migration of many land and marine mammals provides surpluses which will be stocked for winter.
