Before the arrival of Europeans, the inhabitants of the lower coral islands of Polynesia only had a reduced number of materials at their disposal : wood, coral, shells, tortoiseshell, sperm whale or shark bones and teeth. They did not possess any of the volcanic rocks present in the Society Islands, the Marquesas or the Austral Islands. The shells were notably used as a bargaining chip for basalt.
