Located about 62mi (100km) east of Grande-Terre in the Coral Sea, Lifou (Drehu) is the most important of the Loyalty Islands. It is connected to Nouméa by the domestic airport of Wanaham located in the northeast of the island and by the port of Wé served by freight and passenger ferries. Covering an area of 750sqmi (1,207.1km2), it has a population of 9,195 inhabitants made up of 95.4% of Kanak with a density of 7.6 inhabitants/km2.
