The site of Brégançon, which includes an islet and the 15th-century fort that became the holiday residence of the French presidents in 1968, was listed as a picturesque site by decree of December 27, 1924. This protection granted by the Ministry of Culture aims to preserve landscapes considered remarkable or exceptional for their artistic, historical, scientific, legendary, or picturesque character. The recognition as a picturesque site involves both the natural and built spaces of Brégançon.
