Lionfish’spines are used to predator deterrence and to facilitate prey capture. They contain glands that produce venom. When the spines enter the skin of a predator or a prey, the sheath around the spines is depressed and a potent venom is released, reducing the transmission of chemical signals to the muscles of its victim.
