When a lioness that is part of a pride is alone to give birth, she usually goes away for some time. After a gestation of 4 months, the lioness hides away from the group to give birth to her cubs. Alone, she leaves the cubs unprotected against predators for up to 48 hours in order to hunt. She nurses them for the first weeks, hidden, until the cubs are strong enough to join the pride.
