The castle-museum of Dieppe stands on the cliff of Claude-côte, 98 ft (30 m) high. Erected in 1188 by Henry II of England, it suffered numerous setbacks and battles. From 1435, its first governor, the Chevalier des Marets, built three towers, a square tower, and the drawbridge. It was in the 16th and 17th centuries that the castle became the Governors' residence with the opening of large windows. The renowned shipowner Jean Ango (Florida, Hudson Bay, Brazil) and Aymar de Chastes (discoverer of Quebec) acted as Governors in Dieppe.
