The huge Al Shahaniyah camel race track

Located in the centre of Qatar, halfway between Duhkan – the oil city in the west of the country – and Doha, Ash Shahaniyah is a cluster of hotels, shops, and restaurants. The area is popular for its Al Shahaniyah Camelodrome (pictured), the most famous in Qatar, about an hour’s drive from the capital (37 miles or 60 km). Most of the activities associated with camel racing and the breeding of oryx – Qatar’s iconic antelope – take place in Ash Shahaniyah Municipality, which covers 2,050 mi² (3,299 km²) and has been Qatar’s eighth municipality since 2014.
