Limiting heat exchanges

The greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) stands upright by folding its long, featherless leg to conserve as much heat as possible. It thus minimizes the heat exchange, especially when it is in water. The flamingos, therefore, less often sleep on one leg when the air temperature is high, and fewer flamingos do so on land than in water. However, lying down to sleep would make them more vulnerable to predators.
