The wild carnation

In the dunes, its pink flower shines with beauty. But do resist the temptation of plucking it, as the dune carnation (Dianthus gallicus) is a protected species. Endemic to the French Atlantic coast, the dune carnation is 18 to 28 cm high. Its stem is bluish-green, its leaves are short, stiff and nearly flat. The flowers have a subtle fragrance; there are 1 to 3 of them and they grow at the top of the stem. The plant is threatened with extinction due to the degradation of dune habitats and excessive harvesting.
