Like all the scattered islands or islets of the Loyalty Islands archipelago, Lifou island is made up of a raised coral atoll, covered with a dense vegetation. When you get there by boat, it appears as a strip of horizontal and low greenery very different from the vertical profile of the mountainous Grande-Terre. However, approaching its shores is not dangerless because of the fringing reefs leaning against its coastal cliffs.
