The Baliem Valley, also known as Balim or Great Valley, covers 326sqmi (525km²) in the Maoke Mountains, which culminate at Puncak Jaya, the highest mountain in Oceania. It is home to the Dani ethnic group, a Papuan people of hunters, gatherers and sedentary farmers living in hut villages. They crisscross their territory to practice seasonal pickings necessary for their crafts and lifestyle in the uncleared forest beyond their cultivated land. These expeditions are supervised by a man who protects the women of the tribe always very coveted by the enemy tribes.
