Even when they seem deserted, the landscapes and sites of Lifou are never pristine but always bear stories, legends and myths which are fundamental for the Kanak population. In addition, the concepts of private space and property being completely different from Western references, there are no barriers to delimit the land nor the private and even taboo places which should be checked with the local tribes.
