The Château de Vincennes has seen most of the dynasties of the kings of France. In 1162, Louis VII had a hunting lodge, the Capetian manor, built in the Bois de Vincennes. In the 13th century, Philippe II Auguste had the hunting reserve surrounded by a wall. In 1361, Philippe VI began work on the fortification of the manor. Charles V, his grandson, enlarged the perimeter of the fortress, surrounded it with ramparts and ditches, and installed the seat of royal power there. Completed in 1369, the keep is 52 metres high. Louis XIV had the King’s and Queen’s pavilions built, and his move to Versailles in 1682 began the gradual abandonment of the castle.
