In the Kanak society, lands and human beings are one. It is the land which defines the man, constitutes his personality, positions him socially and nourishes him with yams. The Kanak man asserts his position in his homeland while the Kanak woman leaves her tribe and forges bonds based on exchanges and alliances with the clan of her future husband. She thus ensures social cohesion and brings blood and life to the man's clan through procreation.
