Reichenstein castle stands west of the village of Riquewihr. It sits at an altitude of 1,394 ft (425 m) in a place called Kappenwald. It was erected between 1240 and 1250 at the initiative of the Counts of Horbourg. Around 1255, the fortress became enfeoffed to the Reichenstein family, who committed numerous acts of robbery and terrorized the region. The cities of Colmar and Strasbourg received multiple complaints from surrounding villages, and Rudolf of Habsburg formed a militia to organize a punitive expedition to destroy the castle in 1265. Heavily damaged by the attack and by an earthquake in 1356, Reichenstein castle was never rebuilt.
