Si bien el macho tiene un inconfundible color rojo intenso, las hembras tienen el cuerpo amarillo-marrón, cabeza y piernas. Rayas pálidas en la parte posterior del tórax. Presentan en su abdomen una prominente escama vulvaria en forma de pico. Rara vez pueden observarse hembras totalmente rojas.
Hábitat:
Principalmente en África y prácticamente toda Europa. También en Oriente Medio, Asia y Australia.
Hábitat
Se encuentra cerca de aguas poco profundas y tranquilas, como pequeñas piscinas, arrozales, canales de drenaje, aguas estancadas e incluso techos de coches al confundirlos con espacios acuáticos.

Gran capacidad colonizadora de nuevos espacios. Prácticamente extendida en todo el norte de Europa. Durante siglos se mantenía dentro del continente africano pero alrededor de las fronteras del mar Mediterráneo. Era una visita rara en Europa. Ahora es común, y los países del norte de Europa informan de grandes poblaciones de estas libélulas.
