The 1855 World Fair

The World Fairs of the 19th century left their mark on Parisian urban planning, whether it be the Eiffel Tower at the 1889 exhibition or the Grand and Petit Palais at the 1900 exhibition. The first exhibition organised in France took place in 1855 on the Champs-Elysées (up to the Rond-Point). The avenue thus became a place of attraction for high society, which then frequented the Rue de Rivoli and Rue de la Paix instead. A Palais des Beaux-arts, on Avenue Montaigne, and a huge Palais de l’Industrie, along the Champs-Elysées, were built for the occasion. Both were destroyed in 1896 to make way for the Grand and Petit Palais.
