Leucistism is somehow the opposite of melanism. Whereas melanism causes an excessive proportion of melanin and gives a completely black appearance, leucism comes from the mutation of a recessive gene that leads to a white color. Some felines, such as leopards or jaguars, are subject to melanism, others, such as tigers or lions, to leucism.
