The white lion is the result of a genetic mutation of the Transvaal lion (Panthera leo krugeri), transmissible between parents carrying the same gene. This genetic mutation called leucism is due to a mutant allele which inhibits the deposit of black pigment, melanin, except on the ends of hairs. As a result, the coat color varies from white to blond, the mane and caudal brushes of males being blond or cream instead of darker.
