The Riquewihr vineyards, led along high wires, benefit from ideal exposure to the sun. They extend on the Vosges' foothills, at an altitude between 656 and 1,312 ft (200 and 400 m). The Wine Route winds from north to south for more than 105 mi (170 km), crossing over 900 winegrowers' parcels. Most of them are small family businesses that have been active for generations. Riquewihr wine has been renowned since the Middle Ages. The noble grape varieties of Alsace white wine are Riesling, Pinot Gris (formerly called Tokay), Muscat, and Gewurztraminer.
