The village of Ambonnay is located in the Montagne de Reims Regional Nature Park. Its name is said to be derived from that of a Roman officer, Amboniacus, who, in the 4th century, noticed the excellent exposure of the hillsides and planted the first vines there. Since that time, Ambonnay has lived largely from its vines: its champagne is classified as Grand Cru and the red Ambonnay, a Coteaux-Champenois, is a still, non-sparkling wine with aromas of red fruit and morello cherry. Located in Ambonnay, Maison Marguet has abandoned the tractor in favour of the horse.
