Three-quarters of Riquewihr's municipal district is covered by the forest. It occupies almost all land located above 1150 ft (350 m). The village extends at the outlet of the Sembach valley. The forest massif, overhanging it, represents approximately 3,210 acres (1,300 ha). It is part of a large complex in one piece of around 24,710 acres (10,000 ha). An abundant fauna populates the woods around Riquewihr. The fox and badger are common, and deers, roe deers, and wild boars are plentiful.
