The Louvre Palace is a journey through French history. Philippe Auguste (1180-1223) built a fortress which Charles V (1364-1380) transformed into a leisure castle. François I (1494-1547) and his son Henri II (1519-1559) would then build a castle in accordance to the style of the Renaissance. Henri IV (1589-1610) enlarged it and connected it to the Tuileries Palace by a long gallery. The Louvre became a museum in 1793 and was enriched by Napoleon I (1769-1821). Napoleon III (1808-1873) had the Cour Napoléon built. After the fire of the Tuileries Palace in 1871, the silhouette of the Louvre would not change until the construction of the Pyramid.
