Directly above the Pointe du Hoc, a path runs through bombshell holes and the remains of German blockhouses. Since 1979, a war memorial has paid tribute to the courage of the 225 Rangers who repelled the German troops for three days. The artillery battery for which 135 soldiers died remained on the heights of the cliffs with its fire direction post, its casemates, and its shelters. The surrounding terrain is dotted with shell craters that are still clearly visible.
