Barzan Towers in Umm Salal Muhammed

The two Barzan Towers are located in Umm Salal Muhammed, a village about 6.2 miles (10 kilometres) from the coast and 12.4 miles (20 kilometres) north of Doha. Built at the end of the 19th century, the T-shaped tower was renovated in 1910 under the reign of Sheikh Mohammed bin Jassim Al Thani, who also ordered the construction of a vast wall around the village and the gardens. The 52 ft (16 m) high watchtower was used to keep an eye on the movements of Ottoman ships in the distance, to protect the water supplies collected in the area, and to scan the moon during the month of Ramadan. It is built according to traditional Qatari architecture in coral rock and limestone. The second tower – a rectangle flanked by a grand staircase – is a replica built after 1958. Restored in 2003 by the Qatari authorities, these historical remains are now a museum with a garden.
