In his workshop in Arinthod, Robert Marichy still owns ‘pedal’ lathes which work like old sewing machines. The pedal located under the workbench is operated by the woodturner's foot. By means of a transmission system it sets a wheel in motion which, using a belt, drives the lathe. Nowadays largely replaced by electric lathes, pedal lathes are still used in some areas without electricity or subject to frequent blackouts.
