The term Damascus steel refers to the moiré fabrics originating in Damascus and not the swords forged there. Several techniques exist to design this particular metal. The Western or Merovingian one, a form of currying lost towards the end of the 11th century. The Oriental Damascus steel, Damascus steel par excellence. It requires ancestral know-how to achieve the wootz, an ancient Indian type of steel. Finally, the contemporary Damascus steel is called Japanese Damascus steel. It is forged by hammering and stretching.
