The Sisters of Saint Martha

Alongside the construction of his great charity institution, the Hospices de Beaune, Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy, created an order of hospital nuns on the model of that of the Hôtel-Dieu of Valenciennes and drafted its rules. Its congregation of the Sisters of Saint Martha of Beaune settled in the hospices in 1452, when the first patients arrived, before spreading until the 17th century throughout Burgundy, Franche-Comté, Dauphiné, and Switzerland. More recently, a community recommending itself from the Saint Martha congregation of Beaune was even founded in Togo in 1998 and recognized by the local bishop in 2003.
