The rosettes of the Arc de Triomphe

Decreed in 1806, the Arc de Triomphe is Napoleon I’s tribute to the imperial armies. The architect Jean-François Chalgrin, in charge of the project, was inspired by ancient arches, such as the Arch of Titus in Rome. However, he died at the beginning of the work and several architects succeeded each other. During the Restoration, the work progressed very slowly. Under Charles X, the architect Louis-Robert Goust decided to decorate the vault with boxes with rosettes. This neo-classical and baroque style can be found in the Pantheon or the Château de Fontainebleau. The Arc de Triomphe was inaugurated by King Louis-Philippe in 1836.
