In a troop of baboons, all males are dominant over females. But there is also a form of dominance between females, that may change according to their reproductive status, or even to the relationships they have with the most dominant males. These relationships are in particular built on grooming. In this way, a lowlier ranked baboon may be protected by a dominant male and get access, among other things, to better food resources.
