The main grape varieties in Burgundy
1
0
In Burgundy, the main grape varieties grown are Pinot noir and Gamay for red wine, Chardonnay and Aligoté for white wine. Pinot noir grapes are very black and tightened, and resemble a pine cone, hence their name ‘pinot’. Gamay grapes are purple to bluish-black, their tightness depending on the variety. Chardonnay grapes are small, golden, and very sweet. Finally, the Aligoté variety has larger and more numerous grapes than the latter, and they take on a lovely yellow-orange colour during ripening.
