Les platanes du canal du Midi

Relier Toulouse à la mer Méditerranée, c’est le défi que se lance Pierre-Paul Riquet au XVIIe siècle.
Il plante des arbres pour stabiliser les berges du canal. On y trouve diverses variétés qui deviennent une source de revenu. C'est sous l'Empire qu'on commence à planter des platanes, aujourd'hui la variété dominante le long du canal (42 000).
Malheureusement, depuis plusieurs années, les platanes du canal du Midi sont atteints par le chancre coloré, une maladie provoquée par un champignon microscopique, le Ceratocystis platani. Il n'existe aucun traitement efficace contre le chancre. A terme, les 42 000 platanes du canal du Midi doivent être abattus et remplacés par d'autres essences. Cette photo montre un tronçon du canal où nous pouvons encore les admirer.
