The volcanic activity of the Massif du Mont-Dore – which includes the Puy du Sancy on this photo – began in the Upper Miocene (11.608 to 5.332 million years ago), reached its peak in the Lower Pliocene (5.332 to 3.600 million years ago) and died out at the beginning of the Pleistocene (circa 250,000 years ago). As for the Puy de Sancy, it was formed in the last period, between 330,000 and 250,000 years ago.
