The reputation of Notre-Dame de Beauvoir chapel in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie spread from the 12th century due to the miracles of the Virgin which attracted thousands of pilgrims from all over the region. In 'Provence', Jean Giono recounts the pilgrimage he made at the age of 16, his nocturnal arrival for the Mass of Dawn, on September 8, 1911, and the crowd going up to the chapel by the light of small torches.
