The hilly landscapes of the Pays d'Auge

The Pays d'Auge is a natural region of Normandy that extends mainly over the Calvados and Orne departments around the city of Lisieux located in its center. The geological history of this area of the Bassin Parisien with an oolitic limestone subsoil has created a landscape of hills that contrasts with the surrounding plains. The landscape was laid out there in ancient times as a bocage formed by hedges of trees or bushes around wet grasslands. Wooded areas, remnants of the great forests of the past, often crown the tops of the hills. The traditional habitat is dispersed and spread over a large number of hamlets and localities.
