The names of the climates of Burgundy
2
0
While we talk about grape variety in Alsace, castle in Bordeaux or brand in Champagne, the Burgundy vineyard is divided into localities called climats. These multitudes of plots of vines are characterized by their type of soil and their microclimate. It was by observing the different plots of vines that the Benedictine monks found each name of the climates. The 12th century clearing to plant the vines inspired the names Les Chaumes and Les Brûlées. The ‘Clos’, ‘Meix’ and other ‘Chezeaux’ evoke constructions. La Riote refers to a small street and La Romanée indicates the proximity of an old Roman road.
