In their plan to fortify the Norman coasts during WWII, the Germans set up seven support points (Widerstand Nest - WN - or resistance nest) at Utah Beach to reinforce the defenses of the beaches as part of the Atlantic Wall. General Von Schlieben's 709th Infantry Division, reinforced by the 919th Infantry Regiment amounting to 12,000 men, and the 7,000 men of General Wilhelm Falley's 91st Infantry Division occupied the area. On June 6th, 1944, the first American forces landed 1.2 miles (2 km) further south than planned. They arrived in front of the WN5 battery occupied by seventy-five German soldiers, whom they quickly neutralized along with the rest of the German beach defenses.
