The engines of the Ariane 5 rocket

A life-size model of the Ariane 5 rocket is on display at the Air and Space Museum at Le Bourget. During launches, the rocket is equipped with a Vulcain-type cryogenic engine that propels the main stage once it has been stripped of its two thrusters. Engineers start the engine on the ground before igniting the solid rocket stages. It has a mass of 1,685 kg and a height of 3 metres. Since the Ariane 5 program was launched, Snecma Moteurs has produced more than 200 Vulcain engines for development and flight. The second stage of the rocket is powered by a smaller engine, the HM-7B.
