In the past, Franche-Comté had many stone quarries which made it quite easy for the inhabitants of Dole, in the Jura, to abandon wooden constructions in favor of stone. The simplest buildings were built of rubble covered with plaster, only the load-bearing elements (pedestals, lintels, stair steps) being carved in the quarries, while the more monumental constructions used large stone quarters to stabilize and reinforce the walls.
