The Saracen legends of Sainte-Agnès

The alleys of the village of Sainte-Agnès in the Alpes-Maritimes evoke the legends that surround it. The Montée du Seigneur Haroum or the Rue des Sarrasins (Saracens Street) particularly recalls the village's Saracen past. In the 9th century, a Barbary pirate named Haroum fell in love with a young local girl who agreed to marry him provided that he renounced his faith. For love, the Muslim would have converted to Christianity, and Count William of Provence would have witnessed his marriage to the beautiful Anna. On Haroum's death, Anna took orders and is said to have founded a chapel dedicated to her patroness saint in a cave around which the village developed.
