The Invalides during the Revolution

The Dôme des Invalides, the work of Jules Hardouin-Mansart (1646-1708), is the royal chapel of the Hôtel des Invalides. As the Revolution dawned, the people invaded the buildings in search of weapons. Parisians would seize 32,000 rifles and 27 cannons which enabled the Bastille to be taken on 14 July 1789. At the Invalides, the monarchical symbols were removed with a hammer and the four bronze statues of the Virtues were taken down and melted down to make balls. The Hôtel des Invalides became the « Maison nationale des militaires invalides ». The royal chapel and the soldiers’ church of Saint-Louis were renamed “Temple of Mars” in 1793.
