The Inuit people, like others, must protect themselves from the sunlight reverberation on the snow which causes snow ophthalmia, a dangerous and extremely painful affliction. If today they wear modern sunglasses, they have long used craft glasses made of narrowly slotted pieces of wood providing excellent protection. To further reduce the glare, they rubbed gunpowder or soot mixed with oil on their outer surface.
