The Caves of Sao Vicente were formed 890,000 years ago during a volcanic eruption. The outer part, exposed to lower temperatures, solidified rapidly, while the interior continued to flow, forming a series of lava tunnels.
The caves have been open to the public since 1996.
They also serve as a wine cellar for Madeira wine
