Monumental barns in the Cantal

The barns with their roofs in the shape of an overturned ship’s hull have always been the pride of the farmers of the Cantal. These large barns from the Auvergne region have a very special oak frame with beams that meet the ground. They rarely have an attic and their height is comparable to that of a church. At the end of the 19th century, sheep farming was replaced by cattle farming, which needed more space in winter. The barns of the Cantal then became monumental, some being up to 80 metres long and 8 to 10 metres wide.
